What is the difference between brandy and cognac?
Brandy and cognac are noble spirits obtained by distillation from wine. They differ mainly by their geographical origin and their specific production rules.
Brandy is a general name for distillates made from wine. Cognac, on the other hand, is a special type of brandy that comes from the region of the same name in France and is subject to strict manufacturing and aging regulations. Cognac is considered to be of particularly high quality and flavor complexity and is rightly described as one of the finest spirits in the world.
What is brandy?
Brandy is a spirit obtained by distillation of wine. The production process begins with the fermentation of grapes or grape must, converting the sugar they contain into alcohol. Then the obtained wine is distilled to increase the alcohol content. Brandy often comes from countries such as France (Cognac), Spain (Brandy de Jerez), Germany, Italy and other wine-producing regions. Brandy is known for its rich flavor and variety of aromas, which can range from fruity and floral to spicy and woody. This fine spirit is often enjoyed neat, but can also be used in a variety of cocktails and mixed drinks. Brandy is a valued spirit enjoyed by many connoisseurs worldwide.
How much does a good brandy cost?
The price of a good brandy can vary greatly and depends on various factors such as brand, age, origin, quality and reputation of the product. In general, however, high quality brandies tend to be more expensive.
Some cheaper brandies are already available from about 20 to 50 euros per bottle. These may well be of good quality, but are often more suitable for everyday use or as an ingredient for cocktails.
High-quality brandies, especially those with a longer aging period or from renowned brandy regions such as Cognac from France, on the other hand, can cost several hundred euros per bottle. Particularly old or rare brandies can even cost several thousand euros.
How much alcohol does brandy contain?
The alcohol content of brandy varies depending on the manufacturer, brand and type of brandy. In general, the alcohol content of brandy is between 36% and 60% vol. In Europe, particularly in countries such as France and Germany, the alcohol content of brandy is typically between 36% and 40% by volume, although some high quality cognacs may have a higher alcohol content of up to 60% by volume. In other parts of the world, especially in the United States, the alcohol content of brandy can vary further, and some products can have an alcohol content of more than 40% vol.
What is Brandy?
The term "brandy" is used mainly in English-speaking countries and internationally. Both terms derive from the Dutch word "brandewijn," which means "distilled wine" and refers to the traditional method of production. Brandy is a tasty spirit obtained by distilling wine or grape must. A brandy can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Many prefer it neat in a brandy snifter to enjoy its rich aroma.
What is cognac?
Cognac is a famous and highly appreciated brandy produced in the Cognac region of France, which bears the same name. It is a protected designation of origin that must meet strict regulations and quality standards to bear the name "Cognac".
The production of Cognac begins with the cultivation of special grape varieties, mainly Ugni Blanc (also called Saint-Emilion), Folle Blanche and Colombard. The grapes are harvested and pressed into wine. This wine is then distilled into high-proof alcohol in copper stills. The distilled alcohol is then stored in oak barrels where it matures for several years.
The long aging period in oak barrels gives Cognac its rich, complex flavor and characteristic aromas of vanilla, nuts, dried fruit and spices. The quality of Cognac is often determined by its age, with the age designations "VS" (Very Special), "VSOP" (Very Superior Old Pale) and "XO" (Extra Old) denoting the various degrees of maturity.
What does VS, VSOP and XO mean in Cognac?
Cognac is traditionally produced by a composition of different eaux-de-vie of different vintages and sites, which is called "assemblage". However, the assemblage is not a mandatory requirement. The age statement of a cognac refers to the time it has been aged in oak barrels, as the aging process is completed after bottling. The stated age always refers to the youngest part added to the blend.
The classifications have the following meaning:
- V.S. (Very Special) or *** (three stars): The youngest distillate is at least 2 years old.
- V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale): The youngest distillate is at least 4 years old.
- X.O. (Extra Old), Napoléon or Hors d'âge: The youngest distillate is at least 10 years old. Before April 1, 2018, the minimum age was 6 years old.
- X.X.O. (Extra Old): The youngest distillate is at least 14 years old.

How can you recognize a good cognac?
A good Cognac is characterized by several features that reveal its quality. The decisive factor is the origin, because genuine Cognac comes exclusively from the Cognac region in France. The label often features age designations such as "VS", "VSOP" or "XO", which indicate the aging period in oak barrels and give an idea of the quality of the Cognac. Reputable cognac houses are a sign of trust and may be named on the label. Good cognac has a clear, golden or amber color and a complex aroma with notes of fruit, spices, nuts and wood. What is the right glass for brandy and cognac?
